How to play Thieves Next Door

The goal

Every player gets the same house. Find your rivals’ treasures before they find yours. When your treasure is stolen, you’re out. The last player who still has a treasure wins.

How a game works

1. 1. Hide your treasure

   Before the night starts, hide your treasure in a piece of furniture: the bed, the wardrobe, the fridge, the safe… Then set 3 traps and 6 alarms around your house. Your rivals can’t see any of it.

2. 2. Pick a thief and roll the die

   On your turn, pick one of your three thieves and roll the die. Your thief moves up to that many squares: up, down, left or right, never diagonally.

3. 3. Break in

   Choose a rival’s house and walk in through any door or window.

4. 4. Search the furniture

   Stop next to a piece of furniture and search it. Empty? The room hint tells you 🔥 warm (the treasure is in this room) or ❄️ cold (it isn’t).

5. 5. Watch out for traps and alarms

   Step on a trap or an alarm and your thief goes to prison for 3 of your turns. Traps can even hide inside furniture! Only the Lockpicker can disarm a trap, and only the Hacker can turn off an alarm.

6. 6. Steal the treasure

   Find a rival’s treasure and they’re out of the game. Keep going until you’re the last one with a treasure.

Your crew of three thieves

Each thief has one power. Send the right thief at the right time.

Scout

After moving, spots every trap and alarm up to 2 squares away, but can’t disarm them.

💡 Send them in first to light the way for the others.

Lockpicker

The only one who can open the safe and disarm traps.

💡 Send them in when the treasure could be in the safe.

Hacker

Turns off a spotted alarm from the square next to it. The only one who can get into the computer.

💡 Stepping on an alarm still sends them to prison.

🔰 New here? You start simple. Your first games are with the Scout alone, with no traps or alarms: just find the treasure. Win 3 games to unlock the Lockpicker, traps and the safe, then 3 more for the Hacker, alarms and the computer.

Ways to play

• 🌐 Play online with friends

  2 to 4 players, each on their own phone or computer. Create a game and share the code or the invite link on WhatsApp, Instagram or anywhere else. Make it public and anyone can join it from the list of open games.

• 🤖 Practice with bots

  Play against 1 to 3 computer players to learn the tricks.

• 👥 Pass and play

  2 to 4 people on one device. The screen hides everything between turns, so nobody sees your traps.

Coins and the world ranking

Every player starts with 🪙 1000 coins. In online games, the host picks how many coins each treasure holds, from 50 to 500. Rob a house and take its coins; get robbed and you lose yours. The richest thieves climb the world ranking. Below 50 coins? You get 50 back every day.
